The provision of sufficient and clean water is one of the most basic humanitarian goals set out in the millennium development goals. However, according to a recent MDG Assessment, access to clean and safe water in Southern Africa has declined from 75% to 68% . It is becoming increasingly difficult to draw on this vital resource amid. Challenges of poor rainfall pollution and inadequate water management ever though millions across the region rely on ground water, the SADC’s Water Division says there is generally poor understanding to manage this hidden resource. The division says more weight should be put on integrated water management to improve food security and the challenges of climate change.
